As we all know, there are a number of big players in the gas and electricity market. Some of them target local users and some of them target nationally. Some prefer supplying gas and electricity separately and some provide both. Mentioned below are some of the suppliers and a little background information about them.

British Gas
British Gas, covers the major sectors of exploration followed by production, power, its transmission and liquidified natural gas. It is listed in the London Stock Exchange. It came into being in 1996 and today it operates over five continents.
Countrywide Energy
Countrywide Energy, is the subordinate of Countrywide Farmers who just completed 50 years in energy supply regime. They specialise in providing energy and energy related products majorly to the rural and farming communities in UK.
Ecotricity
Ecotricity provides green energy. In other words, it makes energy from renewable sources like wind. They were the finalist in "Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy" in 2007. They have also been recommended by Soil Association and Oxfam. They provide the option of supplying energy from the source chosen by the customer, i.e. 100% clean energy. Thus in this way they also help in protecting environment from harmful emissions.
E.ON
E.ON is a part of the E.ON Group, one of the largest investor-owned power and gas company, which retails power and gas and creates and distributes electricity. They also provide home energy services and recently ventured into the production of green energy, that is, energy produced with renewable sources like biomass with coal. E.ON
Ebico
Ebico or Equitable Billing Company came into existence in 1998 by Phil Levermore of British Gas as a not-for-profit company. Their main target is to supply energy to the needy irrespective of the users’ income, payment, or other factors. They are known not only for cheaper tariffs but fairer tariffs. They launched EquiGas and Equipower later. EquiGas is a domestic gas tariff for people on limited budgets. EquiPower came in 2002 to fulfil the same purpose in the domestic supply market. EDF Energy
EDF Energy was born in 2002 when SEEBoard, London Energy and SWEB came together. EDF Enregy is a part of EDF Group and is currently one of the largest energy groups in UK. First:Utilty
First:Utilty is a comparatively new company in the energy market in UK, it germinated from First:Telecom. It stated in September 2008 with its headquarters in Warwick, UK. They were the first one to start supplying smart meters to the population in UK in order to assist people to get rid of poor customer service and estimated billing, and providing ways for efficient energy consumption and reducing carbon footprint. Green Energy
They buy energy made mostly from renewable and green mechanisms, including Opus Energy Limited, and the National Grid. Their tariff options include one using 17% from renewable energy source and the other using from 100% renewable source. They offer a unique scheme to its customers by inviting them to become shareholders for free.
Good Energy
Good Energy, Good Energy is based in Wiltshire and was started with the main target of dealing with climatic changes caused due to Co2 emission. They produce energy through renewable sources and promote more and more people to switch to 100% renewable energy and improve energy efficiency. For their work they have been awarded Ethical Company Status for 2009 scoring a 10 on 10.
London Energy

Scottish Power first acquired Manweb and then integrated with Iberdrola in 2006 and became one of the top renewable energy suppliers in the world. Npower
Npower (N Power)is a part of RWE npower. Calortex, MEB, MEB Powerline, National Power Energy Direct and Independent Energy, Yorkshire Electricity and Northern Electric and Gas merged together in 1999 to form Npower. They have a large clientele of residential and business consumers. StayWarm
Staywarm is a part of E.ON now and it works on a dual fuel plan that is who ever uses StayWarm plan has to take gas and electricity from E.ON. It is only applicable for people above 60 and offers capped tariffs in such a way that a customer will pay a fixed amount for a year irrespective of any amount of energy consumption or changes in prices. There are some other conditions also attached with it like the maximum number of bedrooms allowed is three and the maximum number of members can be four.
