However, in order to take the first step, one must know who his or her current supplier is.

Who supplies my Gas and Electric?

If you have a look at your bill, it contains the name of the company that supplies you gas and electricity. In case you are still not able to gather that information, try the following options.
If you live at the property as a homeowner, the first contact should be made with the estate agent from whom the property was purchased and to see if they have any details on the file. If the property was owned by someone else previously, there are chances that they informed the utility companies about their departure. Because when that happen, an automated correspondence is generated and send to the property addressed to "The New Occupier". This correspondence may confirm details of who the current supplier is and asking you as a new homeowner, to provide your details for the new account

In case you reside as a tenant then contact your landlord or letting agent and check if they have any such details with them. However do keep in mind that that their information might be wrong. The previous tenants may have not told anyone and changed suppliers according to their needs.

Thus it would be good to keep a check on all correspondences as the above case might exist here also. The tenants did not tell anything to the owner but told the utility company about changing property. Again, the company should send a correspondence to the "The New Occupier" asking about their details to open up a new account and giving details of the old supplier. In case after being at the property for a considerable period of time, there is no such letter there are other means also which can be tried like the 'M Number Enquiry Line' (formerly Transco) which provides consumers with a personal phone number to find out who is the current registered energy supplier in their area. The M Number Enquiry Line number is 0870 608 1524. You can also either contact your local electricity distribution company for their Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS) or energywatch.

It is always advisable that while moving into a house, on the first day itself, do make a note of the meter readings. In case you have a camera, use it to confirm this reading. It would be of great help in case any issues arise regarding use and billing. In case they are locked, do buy a key.
